While airplanes, including US Airways are upping luggage fees, you can avoid paying that hefty luggage charge by reducing the weight of your luggage. US Airways will not accept bags that are more than 100 pounds. For any bag that weighs between 51lbs to 71lbs, $50 fee will be charged. More still, $100 will be charged on bags of 71 to 100 lbs. 

However, a handling fee that is fixed will be charged on motorcycles, boats, surfboards and all. The fixed fee is due to the size of the items, their fragile nature and handling requirements.

If you are United States active military employee for instance, luggage of 100 lbs (45kg) will not be checked. They pass freely provided you have an identity of proof that indeed you are military personnel. Travelers with various memberships like Gold, Platinum or Silver also have a leeway when they carry overweight luggage.
